Tunze 9001 vs Tunze 9002

Tunze 9001 vs Tunze 9002 – Product Review and Buyer’s Guide

If your reef aquarium is prone to accumulating scum and organic matter, you’ve probably considered investing in a new Tunze reef skimmer. By circulating water through a chamber and introducing air into the tank, these skimmers create a foam that traps organic material and small particles. Yet, for it to work, you need the right product. So, should you buy the Tunze 9001 or the Tunze 9002?

The Tunze 9001 and Tunze 9002 are both effective and efficient reef tank skimmers, but they are not rated for the same tank capacity. The 9002 features a larger and more powerful motor, making it better suited for larger aquariums. However, if you have a nano-tank, you should be fine with the smaller Tunze 9001. Consider your needs and buy based on your tank and reef requirements.

In this product review and buyer’s guide, we’ll provide an in-depth look at both the Tunze 9001 and 9002 tank skimmers. We’ll examine their specs and discuss which types of tanks they are best suited for. By the end of this guide, you should have a clearer understanding of which skimmer best suits your needs.

Tunze 9001 Product Review

The Tunze 9001 is a small but powerful tank skimmer that works based on Tunze’s patented “Flash Skimming” principle. By quickly flushing water through a small chamber, it introduces air into the water, creating a large volume of small bubbles that capture proteins and other microorganisms. The bubbles then overflow into a skimmer cup that you can empty to keep your tank clean.

The Tunze 9001 is rated for aquariums filled with between 5.3 and 37 gallons of water. It sits about 6 inches into the tank and clips onto the glass using a magnet holder. The holder is strong enough to penetrate through glass up to 3/8” thick and can be adjusted to any spot in your tank.

Using just 2.5 watts of electricity, the Tunze 9001 introduces about 100 liters of air into your tank every hour, quickly producing visible foam within a few minutes. As the bubbles start to collect more gunk, the foam spills over into a skimmer cup that can hold 0.2 liters of liquid before it needs emptying.

Thanks to its relatively small and low-energy motor, the Tunze 9001 is incredibly quiet and can run all night without bothering a soul. The only downside to this model is that the skimmer cup can be difficult to remove, making it harder to clean the skimmer. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful option for nano-sized reef aquariums and will quietly work throughout the day and night.

Tunze 9002 Product Review

The Tunze 9002 is slightly larger than the 9001, but it still works on the same “Flash Skimming” principle. As its engine whirs, it pulls water into a small chamber and adds air to create a steady stream of foam. This foam collects scum before it can settle into the tank and then overflows into a skimmer cup that you can empty to prevent algae and protein build-up.

The Tunze 9002 is rated for aquariums filled with between 10 and 52 gallons of water, but we don’t recommend using it above 26 gallons for stony reef aquariums. Unlike the smaller 9001, it sits about 8 inches into the tank, but also clips onto the glass using a magnet holder. This holder is stronger, though, and can clip to glass up to 3/4” thick.

The 9002 uses slightly more power, requiring 10 Watts of electricity to pull in 150 liters of air every hour. With a stronger motor, it creates a steadier stream of foam that flows into a 0.3-liter skimmer cup without creating micro-bubbles inside the tank. The foam simply passes into the skimmer cup, helping to keep your tank clean through the week.

The only downside to the 9002 is that its more powerful engine is slightly louder than the 9001. Nevertheless, it’s still quiet enough to go unnoticed throughout the day. Additionally, you’ll have to clean the cup every couple of days but, within just a week, you’ll notice as your tank becomes cleaner and cleaner.

Which Should You Buy—The Tunze 9001 or the Tunze 9002?

Now that we’ve taken an in-depth look at each product, it’s time to decide which one is right for your reef aquarium. You’ll need to choose based on a few simple factors, such as:

  • The size of your reef aquarium – A larger aquarium needs a more powerful skimmer to process all of the water.
  • The type of reef aquarium you have – The density of your reef can also affect how powerful of a skimmer you need.
  • Your budget – Both products are reasonably priced, but keep your budget in mind as you start shopping.

As far as we’re concerned, the Tunze 9001 is a great option for nano-sized reef aquariums between 5.3 and 37 gallons. It’s small, quiet, and doesn’t require much energy to operate, making it perfect for tiny tanks. Additionally, it’s very affordable, making it a great option for budget-minded reefers.

The Tunze 9002 is a better option for larger reef aquariums between 10 and 52 gallons. It’s more powerful, can accommodate thicker glass, and produces a steadier stream of foam. Additionally, it has a larger skimmer cup, making it easier to clean. However, it is slightly more expensive than the 9001.

Both the Tunze 9001 and 9002 are great reef skimmers but, ultimately, the right choice depends on the size of your aquarium and your budget. If you have a nano-sized reef aquarium, we recommend the Tunze 9001. If you have a larger reef aquarium, we recommend the Tunze 9002.

Conclusion

If your reef aquarium is starting to look dingy, it might be time to invest in a new skimmer. The Tunze 9001 and 9002 are both great options, but are both suited to different aquariums. For nano-sized tanks, go with the 9001. However, if you have a larger 52-gallon tank, the 9002 would be best. Consider your needs and buy from there.
